Our shortlist
| Model / class | Published output | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Westinghouse iGen4500DF | 4,500 peak / 3,700 running gas | RV and mid-size backup | Wheeled rather than liftable |
| Westinghouse iGen5000DFc EFI | 5,000 peak / 3,900 running gas | More output plus EFI | Heavier and more expensive |
| DuroMax XP2300iH | 2,300 peak / 1,800 running gas | Compact dual-fuel remote-start niche | Small output ceiling |
| Westinghouse WGen11500TFc | 11,500 running gas / 9,500 NG | Large home backup | 230-pound conventional platform |
Westinghouse iGen4500DF
The iGen4500DF pairs remote start with dual fuel, TT-30R, electric start, digital monitoring and inverter output. Westinghouse documentation describes key-fob remote starting, which is useful for an RV or a safely staged backup setup.
Westinghouse iGen5000DFc EFI
If you need more continuous output, the iGen5000DFc EFI adds electronic fuel injection and remote start while retaining dual-fuel operation and an enclosed inverter design.
DuroMax XP2300iH
DuroMax lists remote start on the XP2300iH despite its compact 2,300-watt class. That makes it unusual among small dual-fuel inverters, though its limited continuous output keeps it focused on lighter loads.
Westinghouse WGen11500TFc
At the opposite end of the market, the WGen11500TFc combines remote start with tri-fuel operation and 120/240V high-output home-backup capability. It is useful when the unit can remain staged outside during an outage.
How to choose in this category
Remote start does not solve choke/fuel/storage problems
A neglected engine with stale gasoline, low battery, low oil or a clogged fuel system will not become reliable because it has a key fob. Maintenance remains the foundation.
Think about shutdown too
The ideal ownership workflow includes a safe way to monitor load, fuel and operating conditions—not merely starting the engine from inside.
Battery maintenance matters
Electric/remote-start generators add a starting battery. Long storage periods may require charging/maintenance according to the manual.
Range claims are secondary
Walls, interference and battery condition affect remote range. In practice the more important question is whether the generator is staged in a safe, visible, serviceable place.
Before you buy
Confirm the running watts, not just the number printed largest on the box. Then verify the voltage and receptacle your load actually needs. If the generator is for home backup, the connection hardware and electrician work can matter as much as the generator itself. If it is for RV use, confirm the TT-30R or other RV connection and allow for air-conditioner startup surge.
Generator safety is not optional
Portable generators are combustion engines. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says to operate them outside only, at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust pointed away from the home and other occupied buildings. A garage, shed, carport, porch, basement, crawlspace, or partly enclosed area is not made safe by opening doors or windows. Install and maintain carbon-monoxide alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas.
For home circuits, do not improvise a connection and never backfeed a house through a receptacle. A transfer switch or properly approved interlock/inlet arrangement should be selected and installed in accordance with the generator manual, electrical code, utility requirements, and qualified professional guidance. For rain or snow, follow the manufacturer's weather instructions rather than moving a running unit into an enclosure.
Output ratings also change by fuel. Propane and natural gas commonly produce less power than gasoline, so size the system around the fuel you actually expect to use. Verify the appliance nameplate, motor starting behavior, voltage, receptacle type, and generator manual before purchase.
FAQ
Can I remote-start a generator from inside my house?
Only if the generator is already operating in a safe outdoor location and the manufacturer's procedure allows it. Never use remote start to operate a generator in a garage or other enclosed/partly enclosed area.
Do remote-start generators have recoil backup?
Many do, but not all. Check the exact model so a dead starting battery does not leave you without a manual option.
Is remote start worth it for RV use?
It can be convenient, especially for larger wheeled generators, but campground rules, exhaust placement and noise hours still apply.
