Portable Generators
THE BLACKOUT COMMAND DESK / Interactive buyer planner

When the grid blinks, have a plan.

The first hour without power is not the time to discover that your backup station cannot start your refrigerator. A simple load table changes the whole decision. Powering essentials is a logistics problem, not a horsepower contest. Build a short outage load list and compare fuel-powered and battery-powered routes.

01 / YOUR REAL NUMBERS

Size the energy before you shop

Enter a daily energy budget in watt-hours, realistic peak sun hours, how many days of battery-only reserve you want, and your largest expected simultaneous running AC load. This quick estimate uses 75% solar derating, 80% usable storage, and a 25% inverter sizing allowance. It is an educational screen, not a verified design or a promise of compatibility.

Try an example, then edit your numbers:

Estimated panel nameplate500 WDaily Wh ÷ (sun hours × 0.75); rounded upward. Site shade and seasons change output.
Nominal battery capacity2.9 kWhDaily Wh × reserve days ÷ 0.8. Real usable energy varies by product and temperature.
Illustrative inverter continuous rating1,300 WRunning load × 1.25. Motor-start surge must be verified separately.

Do not use this estimate to size life-safety equipment or make electrical connections. Confirm actual appliance measurements, manufacturer voltage/current specifications, protective devices and local codes. For outages, fuel-generator safety and approved transfer equipment are separate considerations.

02 / PICK YOUR ADVENTURE

Three ways to make it work

01 / THE 4-HOUR BLIP

Router, phones, lights and medical-device considerations

Battery power can be convenient for modest essentials, provided runtime and device specifications match.

02 / THE OVERNIGHT OUTAGE

Food refrigeration and selected outlets

Calculate motor start surges and energy use. A battery station and fuel generator solve different problems.

03 / THE MULTI-DAY EVENT

Fuel, charging time and a written safety plan

Plan for safe outdoor generator placement and approved electrical connection, not improvised backfeeding.

03 / BEFORE THE CART

Outages are stressful. Buying can be calmer.

List essential loads, peak starting watts, hours of operation, fuel availability, extension-cord ratings and safe operating locations.

Fuel generators must operate outdoors, far from windows, doors and vents. Never backfeed a household outlet; use approved transfer equipment installed by a qualified professional.

Modular systems / Renogy

Build around a complete parts list

Modular solar equipment can suit permanent off-grid builds and RV system expansions. Confirm panel/controller voltage, charging limits, battery chemistry, breakers and installation requirements together.

Check integrated power stations

Compare the plug-in backup loads you need to run, output rating and safe recharge options. Battery stations avoid onsite exhaust, but still have capacity and input limits.

Check the fit before checkout

  • List actual loads in watts and daily operating hours.
  • Check peak and starting loads separately.
  • Verify battery usable capacity and charging temperature limits.
  • Check panels, controller, charger, cables and connector compatibility.
  • Price protective equipment, mounts and professional installation where needed.
